Abstract

There is great need for standardization in the measurement of viscosity, since now the exchange of data is made almost useless by the marked variation in measurement techniques and in the interpretation of the results. In this paper, a number of suggestions are made with reference to the Contraves Low Shear 30: 1. refinement of the method of calibration; 2. standardization of the treatment of the blood sample before measurement with regard to mixing and temperature; 3. automation of the measurement of viscosity by means of a computer program using the HP 9815S, with particular attention to the time factor during the measurement; 4. construction of curves in which the viscosity is plotted against the shear rate and time, so that the curves not only represent a particular value but can also be a qualitative reflection of the blood sample or of the measurement technique.
