Abstract

In this paper, we introduce standardization activities for control and non-payload communication (CNPC) of remote piloted aircraft system (RPAS) which should be necessarily required for safe operation of UAS into national airspace. Recently, terrestrial and satellite based CNPC technologies, which provide high reliable communication link between remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) and remote piloted station (RPS) are being developed under consideration for weight, power and cost (SWaP-C) of RPAS. This paper introduces the system concept and architecture for a RPAS CNPC system, and discusses the related standardization activities in radio technical commission for aeronautics (RTCA), European organization for civil aviation equipment (EUROCAE) and international civil aviation organization (ICAO).
