Abstract

Every two minutes a patient acquires a healthcare associated infection. Every two hours a patient dies because of healthcare associated infection. Five thousand people die every year as a result of health care associated infection. Despite this healthcare staff do not fully comply with standard precautions to prevent infection. This article provides information about infection risks in healthcare and what can be done to improve infection control practice.
