Abstract

Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) offers lots of advantages forstudying fluid mechanics. Many PIV techniques and systems have been developed. However, no standard evaluation tool for evaluating the effectiveness andaccuracy of the PIV systems has been established. To popularize PIVpractically, for each PIV system there should be some means of evaluating theperformance. PIV involves two processes, i.e. capturing the image forvisualization and the image analysis. In order to evaluate the image analysis, the use of standard images has been proposed. Using these images, anybody canevaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of the PIV image analysis. Thestandard PIV images can be grouped into three categories, i.e. standard PIVimages for two-dimensional, custom-made images with tunable parameters andimages for a transient flow. The standard PIV images that we have developedare distributed via the web site http://www.vsj.or.jp/piv as part of acollaboration with the Visualization Society of Japan. They can be applied toinvestigate the performance of any PIV technique. The standard PIV images thatwe have developed have already been accessed by more than 3 000 researchersaround the world.
