Stamp Maps in the Classroom: An Egyptian Example

Abstract

Abstract This article examines how Egypt has utilized stamps, particularity stamp maps, to document its political history and how these stamps can serve as learning tools in the classroom. Starting with the year 1948, when Egypt issued its first stamp map, to 1986, stamp maps depicting momentous historical events are listed chronologically with brief descriptions of their cartographic contents along with the reasons behind their issuance. Examples of some of the stamp maps mentioned are included. In addition to being utilitarian objects, stamps and stamp maps from any country are useful supplements to world geography and world history textbooks and lessons. Suggestions for specific excercises involving stamps and stamp maps are given.
