Abstract

With the exception of one species, the 13 species of Bombacaceae studied at Calcutta produced left- and right-spiralled flowers in almost equal proportions. The exceptional species, Bombax ceiba, produced significantly more left-spiralled than right-spiralled flowers. Two species produced more stamens in their left-spiralled flowers. The sizes of dry pollen grains from the two kinds of flowers did not differ significantly from each other for any species, although the water-soaked pollen grains of Bombax ceiba were significantly larger in the case of the left-spiralled flowers than their counterpart. The correlation coefficient between the size of dry pollen grains and the number of stamens per flower is not significant.
