Highlights

  • Studies have identified socioeconomic disparities in breast reconstruction

  • Our research suggests that surgeons are cognizant of these challenges when discussing reconstruction with patients

  • Surgeons perceive that many factors that negatively influence reconstruction in low socioeconomic status (SES) patients are not modifiable at the clinic level

Summary

Introduction

Studies have identified socioeconomic disparities in breast reconstruction. The objective was to elicit general/breast surgeons’ perspectives on the delivery of reconstructive care and perceived differences based on socioeconomic status (SES). This study aims to further elucidate the relationship between insurance status and PMBR. Prognostic tools, such as risk calculators, provide individualized, evidence-based predictions of patient outcomes, and can improve patient-physician decision making. These tools are limited for breast cancer patients when assessing postoperative surgical complication risk. We developed 4 models that predict the risk of acute postoperative complications for patients who undergo 1 of 5 breast cancer surgical interventions
