Abstract

Stainless steels can provide a wide range of strengths and corrosion resistance in sea water environments. Some have limitations which restrict their use to marine atmospheres or require cathodic protection. Others have been developed to a sophisticated level and have extremely high corrosion resistance in sea water. Degree of alloying, temperature, sea water flow, oxygen levels, chlorination and welding considerations can all influence the performance of stainless steels, and are considered in relation to alloy selection and application.
