Abstract

AbstractPorous stainless steel (Type En58e or A.I.S.I. 304L) is now an accepted material for numerous specialized purposes in chemical engineering, notably filtration. It has excellent resistance to corrosion and can be used at relatively high temperatures.Typical applications in the nuclear-energy field are described where the corrosion-resistance and good strength at elevated temperatures of porous stainless steel are of great value. Some details are also given of the stopping power of the filters for solids in gases and liquids, the behaviour and control of the filter cake, and the performance and life characteristics of the filter material.
