Abstract

ABSTRACT A method of impregnating and sectioning Recent carbonate sediments is described. After etching Alizarin red-S, potassium ferricyanide, Feigl's solution and Alizarin cyanine green are used as stains for these impregnated sediments and also for ancient carbonate sediments. Etching and staining times are given in tabular form. Dry peels of these stained surfaces are taken using ethyl cellulose-trichloroethylene peel sheets. By the use of serial stained peels on a rock surface, calcite, ferroan calcite, high magnesium calcite, aragonite, dolomite, and ferroan dolomite can be identified. The authors consider stained peels to be better than thin sections for the study of carbonate sediments since they show greater detail and are quicker and easier to make. Stained peels of other sedimentary and igneous rocks produced variable results.
