Abstract

A chief public health problem facing the organization of care for people with dementia is the lack of agreement – within and across countries - about measures that should be taken to help people with dementia and their carers. To deal with this problem the International Dementia Alliance group (IDEAL) has worked on developing consensus on key issues related to care of people with dementia and most recently developed an instrument - the IDEAL Schedule - which permits the staging of the patients’ condition in a manner suitable for the provision of specific suggestions about care to be provided. These suggestions are made with due regard to health care interventions likely to be available in countries at different stages of socioeconomic development. The schedule has been tested in different countries and shown to be reliable and useful in the provision of care.
