Abstract

The late August sun descends, as a troupe of actors dressed in military garb untie rowboats from their moorings and begin to paddle 100 metres toward shore. In the distance, the Olympic Mountains emerge from the ocean, silhouetted against an orange and pink sky. Seagulls cry overhead. A Canadian flag flaps in the breeze. One of the actors begins to strum softly on a guitar, and the other performers join him in a haunting Spanish song about love and death. The music is faint at first, but grows ever stronger as the boats approach the shore. It is a breathtaking and delightfully theatrical moment.
