Abstract
Polylysine, in the presence of KC1, induces both muscle and non-muscle actins to form paracrystals. These paracrystals, like those induced by Mg, are made up of laterally associated actin filaments; however, paracrystals induced by polylysine exhibit a polymorphism that is not observed using other paracrystal induction methods. To fully exploit the highly ordered (to at least 2.5 nm) polylysine-induced paracrystals in the three-dimensional reconstruction of the actin filament (work in progress), it is necessary to understand the basis for the observed polymorphism.
