Abstract

Staged laser heating uses simultaneous laser irradiation and magnetic compression to heat a plasma. An analytic model and one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic computations are presented in order to characterize plasma conditions achievable by this method. In particular, results relevant to a recent experiment and results relevant to a fusion reactor plasma are described.
