Abstract

A new approach is presented for utilizing solid wastes of the aluminum and steel industries, the Staged-Electric ironmaking process, which involves a traveling grate for preparing preheated and prereduced pellets for a submerged arc electric smelting furnace. Either red mud from production of alumina or a blend of blast furnace flue dust, sludge and basic oxygen furnace dust as steel plant wastes are the prominent raw materials for the process. These off-grade sources of iron units are converted to steel and high carbon hot metal respectively with only minor metallurgical penalties. A method of extending the technology to commercial practice is presented.
