Abstract

The deactivation of a model coal char during nickel catalyzed steam gasification is mathematically modeled. A previously demonstrated mechanism of deactivation wherein the catalyst particles are encapsulated by a graphitic carbon overlayer is used in the model. It is shown that when the gasification process is conducted in two isothermal stages the amount of carbon converted is greater than when a single isothermal reaction is used.
