Abstract

Staff shortages in Virginia, coupled with safety concerns, have prompted the closure of five mental health hospitals. State and contract staff are leaving, and those left behind must carry on all aspects of patient care without adequate reinforcement, the commissioner of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) penned in a letter to partners and providers.
