Abstract
Nurse Black had worked as a staff nurse on a small ward devoted to the care of elderly mentally ill (EMI) patients for nearly 10 years when it was decided to close the ward and amalgamate it with a new one. It was felt appropriate by Nurse Black's clinical managers to place her on a more acute assessment ward so that her skills and knowledge would be updated and improved.
