Abstract
Abstract This paper outlines the proposed staff appraisal system at the University of Birmingham and discusses the possibilities for student input on the quality of a lecturer's teaching. A pilot study describes the use of a student questionnaire to appraise four courses in the Department of Anatomy. The questionnaire data is presented as ‘Profiles’ which summarize the data in an efficient and elegant form. Further developments are proposed so that the questionnaire can be used as an integrated part of an appraisal system.
