Abstract

Communication and collaboration skills are the 21st-century skills that need to be learned so that individuals can compete globally. To prospective student educators, communication and collaboration skills are necessary to succeed internationally and crucial to encourage the quality of teaching and learning process. The observation results in the “Dasar- Dasar Sains” class on 20 and 27 August 2019 indicate that students are passive in the learning process and feel less comfortable asking or answering questions posed by the lecturer. Students seem awkward with each other when working in groups. Further observation, students have not been able to clearly express their aims and priorities to their peers, and some students judge and do not respect others’ opinions in the forum. This study aims to improve the communication and collaboration skills of 20 pre-service mathematics teachers through a cooperative learning STAD combined with a competitive game Jeopardy. The type of research is a lesson study-based classroom action research. Learning occurs three times, which is consisted of three stages (plan, do, and see) in every meeting. The rubric of communication and collaboration skills has been adapted from Greenstein 2012. The data has been evaluated descriptively. In a more immediate tone, implementing STAD’s cooperative learning combined with competitive Jeopardy games successfully encourages students to improve their communication and collaboration skills in the 21st century. The outcomes of this research show increasing in mean scores and improvement level communication and collaboration after the implementation of cooperative learning and competitive games. In the last meeting, students have a fair category of communication and advance category of collaboration skills.
