Abstract

This paper discusses planar self-propelled motion of a primary body in water generated by using a hinged flap at its trailing edge. The coupled dynamic model incorporates unsteady loads based on Theodorsen’s unsteady lifting theory for sinusoidal flapping at a given reduced frequency and tailored for their application within the framework of the body motion. Numerical simulations and stability analysis are provided for an example based on the geometry of the saithe or pollock.
