Abstract

From the perspective of output current control stability, this study investigates the stable operating area of photovoltaic (PV) cells feeding the DC - DC converter in output current regulation (OCR) mode. In this study, the Buck interface converter adding an additional input capacitor is taken as an example, and its small-signal model including the dynamic equivalent circuit of PV cells is deduced at first. Then, the closed-loop transfer function of interface converter in OCR mode when adopting different control loop formation and the essential condition for output current control stability are analyzed. After that, the stable operating area of PV cells feeding the interface converter in OCR mode is obtained. The validity of the theoretical analysis has been verified by the experimental results of a 150W prototype. The investigation shows that: (i) when the interface converter works in OCR mode, the PV cells can only operate stably in voltage area (VA) or current area (CA). (ii) the type of stable operating area entirely depends on the converter's output current control loop formation.
