Abstract

Stable icosahedral (I) and decagonal (D) phases were found to be formed in conventionally solidified AlCu(Fe, Ru or Os) and AlCu(Co or Rh) alloys, respectively. The growth morphology is a pentagonal dodecahedron for the I-phase and a column with a cross-sectional shape of decagon for the D-phase. The stable quasicrystals are formed in the criteria of the ratio of the diameter of the Brillouin zone boundary to that of the Fermi sphere (K p/2k f)≅1.0, the outer electron per atom ration (e/a)=1.7 to 1.8 and the atomic size factor (λ)=0.10 to 0.11.
