Abstract

The stabilizing action of several o-hydroxybenzophenone derivatives of commercial origin, in high density polyethylene (HDPE), is examined using thermal analysis, i.r. spectroscopy and second-order derivative u.v. spectroscopy. The results show that the compounds are effective inhibitors of the thermally and photochemically initiated oxidative degradation of HDPE, and support previous studies by other workers who observed an antioxidant contribution to the overall stabilizing mechanism of these compounds. The effect depends strongly on the molecular mass of the additive and the conditions of study.
