Abstract

If a magnetic field is frozen into the plasma the plasma can be stabilized, i.e., certain instabilities can be eliminated. However, stabilization requires that the magnetic field lines must not be closed inside the plasma, but must intersect solid metal conductors. In the case of a long pinch these conductors are the electrodes which carry the plasma current.
