Abstract

The open-loop stability of periodic mechanical systems with multiple motion phases and state discontinuities is investigated. We make the assumption that the systems do not have any active feedback, but must rely entirely on their kinematic and dynamic properties to stabilize their motion. By means of a newly developed stability optimization method we are able to determine model parameters as well as actuator inputs and cycle times for which such selfstabilizing motions are possible.
