Abstract

An explicit procedure is given for optimizing the design of the vacuum magnetic field geometry in a quadrupole-stabilized tandem mirror with regard to the conflicting requirements of interchange stability and reduction of radial losses. A simple tandem mirror application is presented to illustrate the technique. For some designs obtained by this procedure, almost all of the particles are trapped in regions of average good curvature.
