Abstract

The stability of the replica-symmetric solution of a model recently proposed for describing the glassy properties of mixed alkali halide-cyanide crystals is examined carefully. The limits of stability are determined in terms of the temperature T and the variance parameter \ensuremath{\Delta} of the random strain fields. Analytical results are obtained near the quadrupolar glass (QG) transition for small \ensuremath{\Delta} and the full line of instaiblity in the (T,\ensuremath{\Delta}) plane is obtained numerically. In addition, numerical calculations of the QG order parameter and of the elastic constant ${\mathit{C}}_{44}$ are given as functions of temperature for various values of \ensuremath{\Delta}.
