Abstract

Cold end recovery currents and quench currents of Nb 3Sn multifilamentary wires with different amounts of stabilizing copper have been measured in magnetic fields between 8 and 11.5 T. The effective heat flux, Q e , at the recovery current in the Nb 3Sn wire was > 0.58 W cm −2 at 10 T. Also, the heat flux showed a clear dependence on the amount of stabilizing copper in the wire and on the magnetic field strength. The behaviour of the heat flux was in good agreement with the equal area theorem of Maddock et al. 16
