Abstract

The stability of a star undergoing C-N-O cycle is examined using the mean field method in Prigogine's theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. It is found 1) that convection and diffusion in the energy-generating zone have an important effect on the stability and 2) that the star is stable if the velocity divergence is less than the diffusion coefficient, or, equivalently, the temperature fluctuation is less than a certain value.
