Abstract

The reduction of passivated Raney copper has been conducted in different reducing atmospheres and space velocities at 573 K. High space velocities in both pure carbon monoxide and pure hydrogen resulted in excessive exotherms and sintering and this led to severe loss of surface area. Reduction in a 5% hydrogen in nitrogen mixture produced no sintering at space velocities in the range 1500 to 11 000 h −1.
