Abstract

The correspondence between the stability of particle orbits in synchrotrons and storage rings and the standard maps of modern nonlinear dynamics is discussed. The problem is exposed in the language of particle accelerator physics. Examples are given how the equations for synchrotron and betatron oscillations can be brought into the form of standard maps.
