Abstract
The stability of a plasma in a magnetic field with nonuniform orientation is investigated in the guiding center limit. Conditions sufficient for exponential stability are derived which are local analogs of those which have been obtained for uniform plasma equilibria. The existence of growth rates slower than exponential ones is considered.
