Abstract

Naval Engineers JournalVolume 87, Issue 5 p. 27-32 STABILITY OF GROUNDED SUBMARINES KAARE M. HEGGSTAD, KAARE M. HEGGSTAD The author has studied Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at technical institutes in Norway and Sweden (HTS 1931, GTI 1933), and at the Norwegian Technical University (NTH 1935). He has served both in the Royal Norwegian Navy and in the Norwegian Merchant Fleet, and has been employed at different works and shipyards in Norway, mainly in connection with diesel engine design and research. In 1947 he was appointed Superintendent Engineer in the Norwegian Navy's Bureau of Ships responsible for all matters relating to submarines (design, building, modernizing, research, and trials). With the aid of fellowships from the Norwegian Navy and the Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, he studied gas-turbines and diesel engines in Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, and the United States in 1949 and 1950. On a U.S. Government orientation visit invitation, he studied submarine design and maintenance in 1958. Currently, he is the Chief Naval Architect (S/M) for the Norwegian Royal Navy, and he has been the author of numerous papers published in European technical periodicals as well as an earlier contributor to the Journal in 1953 and 1965.Search for more papers by this author KAARE M.
