Abstract

We study the constitutive law defining the hyperelastic behaviour of a Knowles material. By allowing the constitutive parameters to widen their range of values, we show that this family of elastic continua is more general than previously noted, in the sense that it includes as limiting cases several different classes of well-known materials (neo-Hookean, Gent, Fung). As an application, we study the stability of a generalized Knowles thin spherical shell under inflation.
