Abstract

Cluster formation by laser-induced field evaporation with Ni, Cu, Ag, Au and W emitters is reported. Doubly charged cluster ions Me 2+ 3 were only observed for Me = Ni, Au, and W. We conclude, that Cu 2+ 3 must be unstable. A simple empirical rule for cluster stability relating bond energy of the neutral cluster to Coulomb energy is given. It predicts cluster stabilities for the reported metals and other elements mentioned in the literature, as well as providing evidence for charge explosion of certain doubly charged trimeric clusters.
