Abstract

The linear stability theory is used to study stability characteristics of condensate film flow down a vertical wall. A critical Reynolds number exists above which disturbances will be amplified. The magnitude of the critical Reynolds number is so small that in all technical situations a laminar gravityinduced, vertical condensate film is unstable. The condensation mass transfer has a stabilizing effect if the temperature drop across the film is constant. For locally constant heat flux across the condensate film no stabilizing effect of the condensation mass transfer can be found.
