Abstract

Some general results on the stability of compressible shear flows are derived. It is shown that a shear-free basic flow supports supersonic waves. Further, the complex wave speed of an unstable subsonic wave is shown to lie in a semiellipse-type region in the upper half plane. For unbounded flows, a sufficient condition for stability to supersonic disturbances and an estimate for the growth rate of an unstable supersonic disturbance are given.
