Abstract

We study the stability of a uniform E field disturbed by a small charged scalar field. Using the adiabatic approximation, we obtain a result similar to that of a constant E field in Yang-Mills theory. Owing to the interaction between the charged field and the E field, this E field usually re- verses itself over and over again. We obtain an explicit formula relating the amplitudes and phases of the charged field before and after every E-field reversal.
