Abstract

Collapse of soft cliff which has a tendency to rapid change has been frequently reported in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Similar damage due to wave-induced erosion has been reported in Hokkaido, Japan. Therefore, accurate estimate of erosion recession and slope failure (or slumping) is required for protecting the shoreline and land border. The purpose of this study is to grasp failure mechanisms and features of coastal cliff attributed to wave erosion. A series of model tests was performed on the model cliff having the corresponding strength with that of the in-situ soft cliff. The features of slope failure and of erosion process were revealed. Based on the test results, a prediction method for the progress of erosion recession was proposed, and its validity was investigated using the slope stability analysis based on field data.
