Abstract

The logarithms of the stability constants (dm 3 mol −1) of the Mg 2+, Ca 2+, Sr 2+ and Ba 2+ mono complexes ([ML n ] 2+) of the bibracchial lariat ether 7,13-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,4,10-trioxa-7,13-diazacylcopentadecane (L 1) vary in the sequence –2,4.86,4.15 and 3.99, those of 7,13-bis(2-methoxyethyl)-1,4,10-trioxa-7,13-diazacyclopendecane (L 2) in the sequence 2. 2.8, 3.62 and 3.45, those of 7,16-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16-diazacycylooctadecane (L 3) in the sequence 2,4.08, 4.29 and 5.33, and those of 7,16-bis(2-methoxyethyl)-1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16-diazacyclooctadecane (L 4) in the sequence 2,2.4, 3.64 and 4.36 in water at 298.2 K and I=0.10 mol dm 3− (NEt 4 ClO 4). The factors affecting these variations in stability and those of similar complexes of some divalent first row transition metal and heavy metal ions are discussed.
