Abstract

Tables of stability coefficients are presented for determining approximately the factor of safety of sidehill benches as well as embankments on a horizontal ground surface. The soil in the bench or embankment may have a cohesion and an angle of internal friction quite different from those in the natural ground. The procedure is based on the normal method for effective stress analysis and is unique in that a large number of factors are considered but only a limited number of tables is needed. Examples are given to illustrate the application of these tables for the stability analysis of sidehill benches. The factors of safety determined from the stability coefficients are compared with those from the ICES-LEASE computer program, based on both the simplified Bishop and the normal methods, and found to be in good agreement.
