Abstract

Finite wavelength modes in the bumpy ϑ pinch are examined by performing perturbation expansions in the small bumpiness on the equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The unstable modes are transverse and compressible. The evolution of two unstable classes of modes from a single unstable class is followed numerically as the plasma β is varied.
