Abstract

Controversy concerning the role of teacher education courses in relation to the professional growth of student teachers has emphasised the need for methods to establish a clear data base concerning the processes and outcomes of teacher education. In this study a questionnaire was developed to measure student teachers' beliefs about teaching, and a survey of student teachers' beliefs before and after a period of practice teaching was conducted. Evidence of both stability and change was found in the beliefs of the student teachers and an association was found between the changes in student teachers' beliefs and the beliefs held by supervising teachers.
