Abstract

The present trend in construction industries is to build tall buildings due to available land scarcity and rise in population. As the height of the building increases, the sway of the building also increases and due to sway, the building stability will be affected. To reduce sway, one of the commonly used techniques is the provision of bracings. Triangulation is created by inserting diagonal structural members (bracing system) into the rectangular areas. Bending of columns and beams in the structure can be reduced by adopting these systems which in turn increases the stiffness of the system. Paper mainly explains the effect of different bracing configurations like X bracing, V bracing, diagonal bracing in multi storied RCC buildings. Various parameters like varying floor height and storey number are considered for detailed dynamic time history analysis. It was observed that there was a considerable variation in the displacement for the varying floor height. X bracing provides a better result in a range of 30% − 40% of reduction in structural deflection. Under similar conditions both V and diagonal bracings had slighter difference in percentage reduction and also diagonal bracing can be preferred in an economical point of view.
