Abstract

The control loop stability design is presented for a single loop 18-GHz frequency synthesizer. The root locus is used as the primary stability analysis tool. Using the root locus along with the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion, the control loop can be made stable over a wide range of loop gain. It is shown that a great deal of stability data can be obtained from the root locus while giving insight into the closed loop settling time. All data from the root locus exhibit excellent correlation with Bode analysis techniques. >
