Abstract

This work deals with the changes in structure and composition which occur during processing of poly(vinylchloride). PVC was stabilised with various concentrations of dibutyl tin thioglycolate (Y 2SnBu 2). Samples were taken after blending and extrusion. The ▪ groups attached to the polymer and the by-products of the stabilisation reaction were studied by coulometry and ir spectrophotometry. The polymer was extracted from each sample by solution in THF and precipitation by methanol. The two methods of evaluation of the rate of consumption of the stabiliser, i.e. Cl − electrochemical titration and YClSnBu 2 (main reaction by-product) spectrophotometric titration, are complementary. Their simultaneous utilisation may be used to forecast the behaviour of blended compounds in extrusion.
