Abstract

To the Editor:
—Since I have an idea that you are the author of the interesting series of biographies which is appearing inThe Journal, I am writing to you personally as a Bart's man to point out a small error of protocol in the Sept 22, 1962, issue (JAMA181:1071). The biography is of "Abernethy of St. Bart's." The hospital is never referred to as "St. Bart's," but as "Bart's" or "St. Bartholomew's." The other "Saint" hospitals in London having short names do not have them contracted when they are referred to, so to speak, colloquially; thus, "Thomas's men," "Mary's men," but "Bart's men." When the reference is formal, the names of all are given in full. A small matter, but perhaps worth noting.
