Abstract
Augustine was born in the Roman province of Numidia (now Algeria). In 391 CE, during a visit to Hippo (now Annaba in Algeria), he was chosen against his will to be a Christian priest, and later became a bishop. Augustine’s discussion of monstrous races would be influential in early modern debates over the theory of polygenesis (see Paracelsus, Bruno, Whitaker, Boyle, and Hale), which held that all men might not be derived from the same biblical patriarch.
