Abstract
WITHIN A FEW months after the completion of the fifth year in office, the United Front (UF) Government faced a serious political crisis that involved a confrontation between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the principal partner, and the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), the main Marxist partner. The crisis ultimately led to the expulsion of the LSSP from the Government and thereby ended the three-party coalition formed in May 1970 on the basis of the Common Programme. The Communist Party (CP), the other Marxist partner, still remains in what is now virtually a SLFP-dominated coalition Government.
